About me

Hi. I’m a development economist. My research focuses on problems of globalization, growth, and development, mainly in East and Southeast Asia. I’m currently employed as a researcher at the Institute of Development Economies (IDE-JETRO) in Tokyo, Japan. From 1991 to 2022 I was a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA and I remain an emeritus of that university. I am also an honorary professor in the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics, Australian National University.

At UW I was affiliated with the Center for Demography and EcologyInstitute for Research on PovertyCenter for Southeast Asian StudiesCenter for East Asian Studies, and La Follette School of Public Affairs.

I’m a member of the inequality measurement, interpretation, and policy network in the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Global Working Group at the University of Chicago.
