About me

Hi. I’m an economist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I teach and conduct research in development economics in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.  My research focuses on problems of globalization, growth, and development, mainly in East and Southeast Asia. At UW I am a faculty affiliate of the Center for Demography and EcologyInstitute for Research on PovertyCenter for Southeast Asian StudiesCenter for East Asian Studies, and La Follette School of Public Affairs.

Since 2016 I am also an Honorary Professor in the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics, Australian National University.

I’m a member of the inequality measurement, interpretation, and policy network in the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Global Working Group at the University of Chicago.
